How testosterone affects hair loss

As hair restoration physicians, we are frequently asked, "does testosterone cause hair loss?" The answer is that testosterone, the male sex hormone, is not directly responsible for hair loss. The real culprit is a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a byproduct of testosterone. When testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, it can affect hair follicles, especially those on the scalp. DHT binds to androgen receptors in hair follicles, causing them to shrink over time. This process, called miniaturization, results in thinner, more fragile hair. Over time, the follicles may stop producing hair altogether, resulting in androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness.
